Adventure in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexican Marine Wonderland: A Marine Science Excursion

Embark on an unforgettable science excursion to Mexico, where you’ll immerse yourself in the rich marine biodiversity, vibrant culture, and breathtaking landscapes of this enchanting country. This carefully crafted journey, guided by experienced researchers in marine biology, ecology, conservation and education, will provide you with hands-on experiences and immersive classes. You’ll explore the country’s diverse marine ecosystems, from the mesmerizing second biggest coral reefs (after the Australian barrier) to encounters with marine mammals, sharks, rays, and more, all under the expert guidance of passionate scientists dedicated to marine research and conservation.

The program covers:

  • In land Transportation (from when participant arrives until leave at Cancun International Airport)
  • Activities
  • Hotel room in double accommodation (single accommodation upon request)
  • Welcome package (Bag, bottle of water, pen, Sceintific guide, hat, and t-shirt).

Activities: Introduction to Marine Ecology

  • Discover the timeless beauty of Tulum, where ancient Mayan ruins meet the turquoise waters of the Caribbean. Tulum beckons you to a world of wonder and adventure. Enjoy your exploration!
  • Learn about the importance of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef Dive, the second-largest coral reef system in the world by discovering hidden coves and snorkel or diving into the crystal-clear waters in the pristine waters, observing colorful fish and marine life.
  • Sea Turtle encounter
  • Learn how to monitor different Marine Mammals and learn about their conservation.
  • How to handle responsible shark and ray, guided by experience marine conservasionist, to observe these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.
  • Migratory Birds and Mangrove Tour: Learn about the vital role of mangroves in coastal ecosystems by enjoying a day of paddleboarding along the scenic coastline.
  • Explore mangroves and observe migratory birds. Participate in a birdwatching expedition
  • Explore the local cenotes (natural sinkholes) and their unique ecosystems.
  • Experience traditional Mexican cuisine and dance performances in the evening.

Our Team

Dr. Carlos Nino-Torres

Dr. Carlos Niño is a distinguished marine biologist and conservation scientist with over two decades of expertise dedicated to the study and preservation of marine mammals. His extensive experience spans North and South America, where he has conducted hands-on research including population surveys, photo-identification studies, and behavioral observations of various marine megafauna species. Dr. Niño employs advanced techniques such as biopsy sampling and stable isotope analysis to assess population demographics, habitat use patterns, and environmental contaminants affecting these species. His research not only informs conservation efforts but also enhances our understanding of marine megafauna trophic ecology and ecosystem dynamics. Alongside his research, Dr. Niño is a dedicated educator, teaching marine biology, mammalogy, and conservation courses at the university level for more than ten years. His passion for education extends to mentoring students on research projects and fostering a deeper appreciation for marine mammal conservation. Dr. Niño’s commitment to scientific excellence and conservation advocacy underscores his mission to protect and preserve marine mammals for future generations.

Dr. Pilar Blanco-Parra

Dr. Pilar is a highly accomplished Marine Biologist with extensive academic and research credentials. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Bogotá Jorge Tadeo Lozano in Colombia (2001), and completed both her Master’s and Doctorate at the Institute of Marine Sciences and Limnology of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (2001-2009). Her research career began with pioneering studies on cartilaginous fish ecology in the Colombian during her undergraduate years, followed by investigations into the population dynamics of the blue shark (Prionace glauca) for her Master’s thesis. Her doctoral research focused on the biology, ecology, and fisheries of a guitarfish species (Zapteryx exasperata) in the Gulf of California, establishing her as a specialist in elasmobranch biology. Dr. Pilar has collaborated with renowned institutions worldwide, including NOAA, the University of California, Davis, and the IUCN, contributing significantly to global assessments of shark populations. She currently serves as a researcher for CONAHCYT at the University of Quintana Roo Campus Chetumal, leading multiple projects that advance understanding of marine ecology in the Mexican Caribbean.
